New Year, New website

Hi everybody, its been a while. The website was looking a bit shabby and never really recovered from the hard drive failure of last year, so over christmas I have been trying to update things a bit. Things are slightly buggy at the moment so if some links and other things seem not to work bear with me, I am working on it. In the end it should provide a more pleasant, less clunky, experience. I have been working on quite few few new sculptures over the last but haven’t gotten around to photographing most of it so, here is an early shot of a troll I am working on.

I have been pretty busy with university and lately and have not had much time to dedicate to this site. To those of you that regularly follow my weblog ( I know there are at least two or three of you) sorry for the lack of anything new. I have 3 resin kits that are all about 95% done and just need the last little push to completion, I am hoping to have them available for you soon.

Here are two sculptures I did as demos over the last few months. The first one I did during the calgary comic-con and the second I just did this weekend at my cities local art festival.

Back from Calgary Comic-Con

I’m back, and mostly recovered, from the Calgary comic and entertainment expo. Spent the last few days sleeping, still doesn’t feel like enough though. I had a hand full of hours worth of sleep the week leading up to the convention; felt like a zombie the first two days. Thank the gods for crappy convention coffee and $6 lemonade.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by my booth, I had a real blast meeting all you great people. It is very gratifying to get such great reaction from everyone, well.........I guess I did get the occasional crying child. And a special shout out to those who’s narwhals bacon at midnight, you guys (and lady) are awesome. This is only my second year exhibiting, but I have attended the last five and every year the show seems to doubles in size, this year had an insane number of people. I wish I had a little more time to get around and see everything, I keep seeing picture from the show and am pissed I missed out on much of the cool stuff.

Finished this guy off and waiting for the mold to set completely, should be able to cast one up tommorrow. I forgot how much fun it is to work at 1:1 scale; so much faster and freeing. Its nice not have a small hand jitter set you back hours worth of work.

Just finished painting this little guy. I was going for a look with a little age to it. I think I may do a “fresh” paint job with a lot more blood and guts if I get some spare time in the next few days.

I found that there was a setting on my gallery pages that was restraining my photo sizes, I changed the setting so I have some MUCH higher resolution pictures of some my work.

New Zombie Kit Available for Order!

Here is a new kit for you, hot out of the mold. This is the first of 3 new kits I will have available in the coming weeks. I have been meaning to do a zombie for years and finally got around to it. He is a small little guy, 12 cm bottom to top, and I have him going for $20 available on my store page. There are a few more photos available on the gallery page. I am hoping to paint on up today or tomorrow so I will have some more pictures for you soon. Enjoy.

Here is a great painted up, done by the good Kevin DeAntonio, of the Innsmouth look bust. I was really blow away by the amazing paint job he did and felt I needed to share it. I am alway taken aback by the different looks people come up with. I have these creature and characters living in my head for months and then I see something like this, and I am surprised and staggered on how different the interpretation is from my own. I love that feeling. Thanks Kevin.

Been awhile since the last update. Been busy. The next two months are crunch time getting things ready for convention season, so I should have some more regular updates as I have get things done. I have plans in a bit of a different direction and hope you good people will enjoy.

Monsterpalooza is this weekend. Unfortunately my broke ass cant make it out this year so, I thought I would console myself by finally getting around to painting one of my innsmouth kits. My experience painting kits in any realistic fashion is very limited and up until now. This has definitely been a learning experience and these shots are of the........ I believe 6th or 7th painting attempt this weekend . I think I spent just as much time stripping the old paint off as applying new. Either way I am happy with as it is now.

Film adaptations

One of great trials of my life was to avoid like the plague, the anything to do with the film (TV mini series not produced yet) adaptation of Dune. I had not read the book and I knew once I saw the film, it would forever change the way I could interpret Dune for myself. I was successful in my endeavour and I eventually I around to reading Dune. Its was amazing. The vast Imperial palaces, grand vistas of sand, the beauty and determination of the lady Jessica, the grotesque garishness of the Baron, The mysterious otherworldliness of the space guilde, all wonderful and glorious in the theatre of the mind!

I saw the film not to long ago.

It was not that it was necessarily bad but, it paled in comparison to the film my head theatre played. It felt very small and nothing like what I envisioned. I felt a little let down, as I knew I would be. Given my head doesn’t have budget to stick too, studio suits breathing down its neck, or having to cram it into a 2 hours span, its understandable but, I would have imagined a vastly different dune should I have experienced it prior reading. The only thing the film and my head had in common were casting Brad Dourif as Piter De Vries, but my version was much more wormtongue-ish, less eyebrows. There was defiantly NO Sting in a winged blue speedo!

Tolkein’s middle earth can never be seen in the same light after Jackson (thats not a bad thing), same adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, Conan, anything by Philip K. Dick, etc. Big films have a way of forever changing the aesthetic the interpretations of literature. Specifically with visual artwork concerned. Compare fantasy artwork produced pre and post LOTR. Elves, trolls, goblins, orcs, are just not the same as they used to be. I have yet to see any little pixieish winged tree dwelling creatures pawned off as elves that were so common, and long gone are the days when orcs only used to be grunting brutish green pig-man monsters. The imaginations lexicon changes, not necessarily for the worse but there is a changes.

I guess the whole point to this shpeel is there are several movies in production of favourite books or series of; John carter of Mars, At the Mountains of Madness, The Hobbit, and I want going to try and get my interpretation of the character and creature (most likely creatures) before the films come out and change them for ever. Dont get me wrong, I am thrilled to see them get the silver screen treatment, Judging from who is directing and working on them they I have very high hopes but, it will be a little sad to see an iconic character like Smaug receive a definitive actualization. I started with Tars Tarkas from john carter of mars because I believe a film trailer is due very shortly that i am guessing would undoubtedly reveal the look of the green men of Barsoom. The elder things should be next after. Obviously this is still a WIP.

I apologize for not updating the blog as I was. Ever since the computer fiasco and a few other personal life issues I sort of fell out of the habit. I guess I am done doing the daily busts for the time being. I kept it up for about 10 months until which was better than I expected. I will try to do I final tally soon to see how many I actually did and take a group photo.

Last year I was fortunate enough to get my Innsmouth Look into a few publications. First off I receive a very nice review from the always awesome Mike Falcigno (http://www.falcignoart.com/) in issue 47 of Amazing figure modeler. I am not worth of is words. Secondly, I am thrilled to have it accepted to be in the 2010 publication of Spectrum, Spectrum 17. It is very humbling to have to work beside such master as David Meng from the Weta Workshop. The deadline for Spectrum 18 is in a few weeks, wish me luck on lighting strike twice.

For anyone wondering what is going on with the new lovecratian kit I have it molded and but am having at little trouble having to tentacles come out satisfactorily. I should have it all figured out soon and available for order.

Just back from Los Angeles. I took a trip down there to take Jordu Schell’s Creature design course. The course is usually done over 5 weeks on saturday but they put one on for international students crammed into 5 consecutive days. Really a fantastic class and the instructor Jordu Schell is a master at what he does. I learned quite a lot and met some great fellow artists and nerdy enthusiasts. I highly recommend the course to anyone with even the smallest inkling of interested in creature design. The class focused mainly of sculpting half masks out of WED clay and casting then in latex. Here is my child molesting devil clown. We had two short days to work on our sculptures so this guys has a few rough areas. I have decide I love working at this scale so as soon as I can find a supplier for WED clay I will be posting more crap like this.

Got all my molding done so if anyone is interested, Irenicus is available on the store page. As with the Innsmouth look, it is it available as a resin kit and also a faux-bronze statue. I have also added a gallery page with that includes some finished and WIP shots.

I did a few touch-ups on the sculpture before casting. Nothing too major; re-worked the neck, added some more metaly bits and fixed a few blemishes.

Ah yes, In celebration of this new sculpture, I have lowered the price on the Innsmouth Look kit and faux-bronze by $10.

I have been working on and off of this guy for the last few months and final finished him up today.

I have had his face done for quite a while and have been fiddling around with the base and details on the chest for far too long. I was mostly hung up on the base. It is so easy just to stick a sculpt on a generic knob thing and call it done, but I find, especially with busts, the base has to provide context for the character. For instance, if you saw a bunch of swastikas on the base, it would greatly change the way you would perceived the character. Same thing would go If you saw rainbows, flowers, and puppies; the base illustrates the characters essence to the viewer. For instance before I sculpted the base for this guy, people who saw him would comment on how good of a portrayal of Pinhead it was. I would explain to them that it is not Pinhead,I don’t really like Pinhead, and that Pinhead can go shove his pointy melon up his own ass for all I care. I haven’t had anyone make that misjudgement since I added the base.

Yes, there is an argument to be made about leaving the interpretation up to the viewer so they can project inner feelings and expunge emotional ..........blah blah blah, and all that crap , but sculpture is another form of illustration so having a banal mundane sculptural support system serves the purpose, but I would consider that a missed opportunity. Take this character for instance, I don’t expect many (if any) of you are familiar with him so here is a quick back story.

Jon Irenicus, a powerful elf mage that sought to obtain the power of the elven gods. In punishment, the gods stripped him of his elfdom (elven equivalent of humanity). Seeking vengeance , he corrupted and twisted his body and soul with the in the pursuit of power.

I was going for a base that reflects the characters nature and inner being. A once magnificent tree, tortured and tainted.
Experimented upon now has bits of metal, wire and machinery contrasted against its natural form. Corrupted beauty, much like Irenicus himself (gods, I hate writing this crap). Anyway, it took me awhile to figure out exactly what i was going to do and re-sculpted it a couple of times.

but This was a personal piece andI don’t expect many people to be interested purchasing a casting, but I am casting one for myself anyway so I don’t see why I shouldn’t make a few extras for those interested. I should have it molded and have castings by the end of the week for those interested.

Sorry again for the lack of updates. I have sort of fallen out of the habit of doing the “daily micro busts” lately; not so much daily anymore, more “whenever I feel like or remember to do micro busts”. Ah yes, before I forget. I added a new sculpture and some in progress photos to the gallery pages.

Anyway here is one I did as a little conceptual study for a competition the Shiflett brother have going on their forum right now. The theme is Monster Rider and this is an idea for one of the monsters.

I was not happy with the micro bust, it didn’t really capture the feeling I was going for so I did another sculpt in a larger format. It is closer to what I want.

Also, I have been experimenting with some casting and painting techniques and these are some of the results. I am not a very experienced painter and did this first guy just as practice really. The second one was an experiment casting cold-cast bronze. Had a few air bubbles but turned out mostly ok.

Sorry for lack of updates

I apologize for the lack for updates lately. I have been very busy and have not had a lot of time for this blog. Also with since my hard drive crash it has been difficult to update my site. All the root pathways linking my pictures to my site have all been changed so I have to resubmit everything. I have not felt like spending the many tedious hours to complete that task.

On a better note, I have been playing around with the new zbrush 4 and it is a very powerful tool. A huge leap from the out-dated version I was using. I tried do a very quick digital recreation of one the busts done a few months ago. I think it turned out pretty well, and the new tools made it very easy to get what I wanted.

Hard Drive Crash

Hello people.

I had a major hard drive crash last week and for that reason it has been rather impossible to update my site.

For some reason my computer fans were not running properly and my hard drive overheated leading to mechanical failure. Now, if your a smart person, this shouldn’t be that big of a problem because all your important shit should be backed up, but unfortunately, I am not that smart sometimes. I have 80% of my stuff backed up in one fashion or another, but my important stuff like my website, all my digital artwork, pictures of my artwork for the past 5 years, about 15 GB of reference material, important documents, and lets not forget game save files(very important stuff that) were not backed up.

I am not going to go into detail but, I spent most of last week trying every possible method get my files off the damned the drive. I was about this [-----------------] close to sending into a professional data recovery place, but just on a whim, I tried to see If just by chance, my computer would boot up one last time (at this point my computer wouldn’t even recognize the hard drive as existing) and the computer gods smiled upon me, and the old girl booted up and I was able to get everything essential off.

So between that, my day job, and other commitments I really haven’t done any work on the micro bust the last week. It is going to take awhile to get everything back in order,but I will start up sculpting again tomorrow and I should have another resin kit available hopefully before the end of the month, depending on how finicky molding process goes.

Didn’t get around to photographing yesterdays, so its tagged on today.

My thinking went like this, David Bowie is awesome. Steampunk is awesome. Therefore, David Bowie + steampunk = super awesome. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get what I wanted in my normal scale, so he is quite a bit larger, about 1/6 or 1/5 scale. I am going to have to revisit this concept in the future with a full sculpture where I can really work out the design and details.

Been down south the last few days celebrating my neighbors, the Americas, independence by setting off small (usually controlled) explosions. I was fortunate enough to find some super Sculpey FIRM at a decent price and picked up a few bricks. It is near impossible to find SS firm in Canada, on occasion someone will have some in stock but the price is ridiculous ( $28 a pound) and is usually crumbly grey crap in a box. It is a pleasure to sculpt with, much better than my home made attempts at replicating it.

At a bit of a loss of what to sculpt these days. I was attempting to do a different style of eye with this one. When I finished, It was looking a little bit to familiar and then I realized it a sort of mash-up of two Ian Mccaig illustrations. No surprise really, I was thumbing through his book yesterday. Funny how those sorts of things mull in you head for awhile and leak out here and there.

Not really sure the direction I was going with this one but it remind me of a magician. The missing entires for the last two days may or may-not be attributed to Canada day, and the taking in of spirits and cold ones.

On a side note, I was able to find a better supplier for my shipping and packing materials so the shipping costs on the Innsmouth Look bust have been lowered. Speaking of which, I should have a new kit ready to ship out in the next week or so. I was been to have it out two months ago but I was awaiting the arival new casting equipment and I decided to do some last minute revisions on the sculpt.

Here is a little guy that frequents my sketch book on occasion. So often I try and come up with new concepts on the fly when I am doing these, I forget I have a whole slew of creature drawings from the past few years to draw upon. They aren’t very good drawings and I sometimes cant figure out WTF I was trying draw, but they are there. I should dig up my old grade school notes, I probably have some great designs in all the margins of my math papers.

Sorry for posting anything recently, I am just getting over bad case of food poisoning and was out of commission for a bit there. I will spare any details but think of that one scene from Exorcist, but from both ends. Next time I wont be getting the foot-long tuna from the sparsely frequented subway at 1 am.

Anyway here are the few busts I was able to get done. First one was an half hearted attempt at an jap-anime style head, the other are just the normal face of monsters. Might have to do double time for the rest of the month to catch up on lost ground.

I have been way from my tools and materials the few days and I am chagrined to have missed a few busts. I have been house sitting for my brother; taking care his animals and making sure his lowlife, thieving, vandalizing, car smashing neighbors don’t steal, vandalize and break anymore of their property while he is away. I have been away from the house (studio) the last few days so I have been rather unable to do any busts. Instead here is a project I did for a contest on deviantart.com. The objective was to portray yourself as a character from Burton’s Alice in wonderland. I didnt know about the contest until two days before the deadline so it was a bit rushed. It doesn’t really look like me but no one will know that, will they. 1st prize is $1000, doubt I will get it but heres hoping. I will post a WIP gallery soon.

Couldn’t think of a new design today, dreary weather saps the creative humor, I suppose. I decided to see how far I could get digitally with a concept I have already thought through and worked out the kinks. I am beginning to rather like zbrush. After getting over the the initial “ WTF is going on!!!!!” with the interface and such, once acquainted with the program it is rather easy to get done what you need too.

A digital bust today, another iteration of the green men of Barsoom. I couldn’t figure out a proper way of appending the ears on so I have left them out.

This is my third sculpt with zbrush. Its nice being only have to sculpt things once with the x symmetry feature, really speeds things up, but it does tend to sterilize the sculpts a bit. Its also very nice not getting hand cramps and straining my eyes trying to sculpt detail on bust smaller than my tumb. Will probably be doing more digital busts for the next little bit as I have some time to actually familiarize myself with the zbrush.

Felt like doing a self portrait today. I believe it to be a relatively fair assumption of myself The eyes aren’t quite right and the nose bridge is a little broad but, I didn’t feel like fawning over it for too long. Mayhaps I will try again in a month or so.

Sadly, today marks the passing of a legend. One would be hard pressed to find any fantasy artist that hasn’t been profoundly influenced and inspired by the work of Frank Frazetta, I am no exception. His legacy lives on through his artwork and the artists he had inspired over his lifetime. Rest in peace Frank.

Well, after a week of sculpting female faces, I believe my grasp on the subject has much improved, at least in the quickness of execution and understanding of form. I have come to realize when sculpting a female you have to put much more finesse in texture and surface or then they end up looking like diseases old hags. Males are much easier, you can go all willy nilly leaving tool marks and surface imperfections; just adds character. I don’t think I can improve much on my female sculptures in this format, just due to small and hasty nature of them. Tomorrow will be back to weird creatures.

Another female and adventures in Zbrush

For the last year or so I have been meaning to learn Zbrush and I finally got around to it over the last little bit. I tried doing a digital version of my Innsmouth fishman, just as a way to how well the sculpting process translated to digital. This is my first real attempt at sculpting something, everything else has been either a textured sphere or tangle of stretched polygons. I am unfortunately using an outdated mac version so I cant take advantage of zsketch and some of the other updates, but I find it fairly streamlined and fun once you get around the awkward menu system. This guy came together pretty quickly and only spent about 2 hours actually sculpting him, about 8 hours reading tutorials and watching video demos.

Oh yes and a lady bust. Better than yesterdays but still a long way to go.

Halfway Point

Well, I have been doing these since the beginning of november, which makes tomorrow the halfway point. I have 122 of the little buggers which means I missed about 60 days. I am a little disappointing about that but for the next half I am going to try a little bit harder and only miss 30 days. I got everyone together for a group picture.

Also I decided to confront the fact that I am rather inept at sculpting the female face. So I will be sculpting those until I am satisfied ( or get bored) with my results. Damn, I suppose I will have to spend countless hours staring at reference material of beautiful women, the things I have to do...........

Back From Calgary Comic Con

Just got back from the Calgary Comicon and I had a blast. My first time presenting rather than attending and it was huge year, busy, busy, busy. I was a little unprepared and running on fumes the first day but all is well that ends well.

Thanks to all you cool people who stopped off to say hello and a very special thanks to those extra cool cats who picked up some of my work, you guys made the show awesome. It was really great talking to all you fellow artists and attendants. I made these little beauties during the show. Haven’t done one of these in super sculpey in a bit and I forgot how much fun it can be.

Didn’t feel like doing the normal grim looking micro bust today so I opted for a cartoony one instead.

I started a new Lovecraft inspired sculpt. Its not based on any story specific monster, but the mythos as a whole. I really liked the design of, what I believe was the 11th micro bust, and want to flesh it out. I original bust is in the picture for comparison.

I missed doing the daily busts the last two days but I have been working on this. I don’t count it as a daily bust.

Started this guy yesterday. The style was inspired by the lovely busts that TIm Bruckner did not too long ago. Began as a sort of doodle and as with so many of my sculptures, this has turned into something geeky from literature, pop culture or video games. This one started to remind me of the main antagonist from Baldur's Gate II, so thats what he is going to be.
